Position Overview
The Institute of Bioengineering of Catalonia (IBEC) is an international biomedical research institute of excellence based in Barcelona, Spain. IBEC seeks a Director to provide full‑time leadership, scientific vision, and strategic management of research activities, staff, finances, and collaborations.

Responsibilities
Define and steer the IBEC Strategic Plan and research activity program, presenting to the Board of Trustees.
Ensure financial sustainability, secure competitive funding and private sponsorships, and oversee the financial management of the institute.
Supervise scientific human resources, including selection and development of research positions.
Represent IBEC at official, academic, industry, and political events.
Lead strategic development, create a stimulating research environment, and coordinate scientific and technological vision.
Organise, manage, and execute research, training and internal organization of the institute.
Propose new programs, research lines, and funding opportunities to the Board.
Maintain regular communication with external partners (I‑CERCA, Generalitat, universities).
Cultivate value‑creating outcomes from research and secure resources to achieve institutional objectives.
Explore and foster national and international partnerships to increase the impact of IBEC science and technology.
Serve as spokesperson and communicator to stakeholders, including funders, politicians and journalists.
Provide guidance to all institute members, especially strategic, technology‑transfer, academic and technical departments.
Support training, career development and mentoring in line with the Equality, Diversity and Inclusion program.
Appoint and oversee the Administrative Director and other key staff.
Approve internal operating rules in agreement with the Board of Trustees.
Lead evaluation of the institute and participate in CRO evaluation procedures.
Qualifications & Experience
Track record of international scientific excellence and leadership.
Exceptional leadership and team‑management skills.
Proven experience in strategic planning, resource allocation, and priority setting within dynamic research organisations.
Knowledge of international research systems, especially European programmes.
Ability to represent IBEC across academic, industrial, political and social settings.
Excellent people‑management, communication and administrative skills.
Visionary, intellectually creative, and able to foster a culture of innovation.
Strong ethical integrity and commitment to developing staff for high performance.
Strategic thinking, ability to create and capitalize on opportunities for the institute.
Contract & Compensation
The Director will be appointed with an open‑ended contract, renewable after five years upon review. Compensation is an international competitive salary, an attractive start‑up package, and long‑term funding for the research group. Additional benefits include extended vacation, flexible working hours, and support for work–family balance.
