About IBEC
The Institute for Bioengineering of Catalonia (IBEC) is an international biomedical research institute of excellence located in Barcelona, Spain. It hosts more than 400 scientists from 34 countries and focuses on the deeper understanding and control of living systems.
Role Overview
IBEC is searching for a Director who will provide full‑time leadership, champion the institute’s mission, and oversee scientific, technical, and financial strategy. The Director must belief in IBEC’s values, have a proven record of scientific excellence, and be able to work with industry, governments, and academia.
Responsibilities
Define and lead the IBEC Strategic Plan and research activity programme; submit to the Board of Trustees and coordinate execution.
Guarantee financial sustainability and secure sources of income, including competitive funds and private sponsors.
Co‑supervise the institute’s economic activities with the Administrative Director and oversee scientific human‑resources management, including selection and appointment of research positions.
Represent IBEC at official and social events in coordination with the President and Board of Trustees.
Stakeholder engagement: maintain regular communication with I‑CERCA, Generalitat de Catalunya, universities and other supporting bodies.
Lead the creation of a stimulating environment for top bio‑engineering research and define the overarching scientific and technological vision.
Direct, organise, manage, and execute research, training and internal organisation of the institute.
Propose new research lines, programmes and potential funding sources to the Board.
Drive strategic actions to secure resources necessary to achieve the institute’s objectives.
Explore and foster new national and international partnerships that increase the impact of IBEC science and technology.
Act as the spokesperson and communicator to key stakeholders, including funders, politicians, journalists, and the scientific community.
Provide guidance to all institute members, especially strategic, technology‑transfer, academic and technical departments.
Support training, career development and mentoring at all levels in line with IBEC’s Equality, Diversity and Inclusion programme.
Appoint and manage an Administrative Director and, where appropriate, deputy‑directors, unit and laboratory managers, and scientific advisors.
Approve internal rules of operation jointly with the Administrative Director and following Board guidelines, including participation in periodic CERCA evaluation.

Strategy‑oriented with a proven capacity to create and capitalize on opportunities for the Institute.
Outstanding scientific vision, integrity, communication, administrative skills, energy, and motivation.
Excellent people‑management skills and commitment to staff development.
Proven experience in leading dynamic research organisations, including strategic planning and resource allocation.
Expertise in representing institutes across academic, industrial, political, and social spheres.
In‑depth knowledge of international research systems, particularly European programmes, is highly desirable.
Contract & Benefits
The Director will receive an open‑ended contract with renewal after five years, subject to evaluation by the Board of Trustees. The appointment includes an international competitive salary, an attractive start‑up package, and long‑term structural funding for the incoming Director’s research group.
