Job Summary
Border Patrol Agent (BPA) – Experienced (GL‑9 / GS‑11) – NEW RECRUITMENT AND RETENTION INCENTIVES! These are higher‑salaried federal law enforcement opportunities with the U.S. Customs and Border Protection (CBP). Your current or prior law‑enforcement experience may qualify you for a Border Patrol Agent position. You may qualify if you have experience as a military police officer or a member of a state or local law‑enforcement organization. Duty assignments available at the time of offer may include the Southwest Border, including prioritized locations. U.S. Border Patrol determines duty assignments at the time of offer based on operational needs, and relocation may be required.

Salary and Incentives

Base Salary: GL‑9 / GS‑11 – $63,148 to $120,145 per year.
Locality Pay: varies by duty location.
Overtime Pay: up to 25% of base pay.
Recruitment Incentive: up to $20,000 – the first $10,000 is paid upon successful completion of Border Patrol Academy; the remaining $10,000 is awarded for accepting a prioritized location.
Retention Incentive: up to $40,000 distributed over the first four years.
Prioritized Locations: Sierra Blanca, TX; Presidio, TX; Sanderson, TX; Comstock, TX; Lordsburg, NM; Freer, TX; Hebbronville, TX; Ajo, AZ.

Duties and Responsibilities

Detecting and questioning people suspected of violating immigration and customs laws.
Inspecting documents and possessions to determine citizenship or violations.
Preventing and apprehending aliens and smugglers at or near the border by maintaining surveillance from covert positions, including the use of infrared scopes at night.
Interpreting and following tracks, marks, and other physical evidence of illegal entry of persons or contraband.
Performing farm checks, building checks, traffic checks, city patrols, and transportation checks.
Patrolling the international boundary and coastal waterways using vehicles, horses, vessels, off‑road vehicles, ATVs, snowmobiles, and motorcycles.

Qualifications
GL‑9

One year of specialized experience equivalent to the next lower grade, performing duties such as physical searches of detained individuals, vehicles, and surroundings for weapons, contraband, currency, and evidence.
Apprehending, physically restraining, or working with law‑enforcement officials to identify or apprehend violators of state, federal, or immigration laws.
Proficient in the use of firearms, preparing investigative reports, serving court orders (e.g., warrants, subpoenas), and gathering evidence for criminal cases prosecuted through the court system.

GS‑11

One year of specialized experience equivalent to the next lower grade, with authority granted by state or government to enforce laws, make arrests, and investigate crimes.
Utilizing intelligence information to track illegal operations, criminal activity, threats to the nation, and/or contraband.
Leading investigations of fraud, contraband, criminal activity, threats, and illegal operations to determine sources and patterns.
Apprehending violators using complex technology including surveillance, detection, situational‑awareness systems, and/or communications equipment.
Make arrests and exercise sound judgment in the use of firearms; deal effectively with people in a courteous manner; analyze information rapidly and make prompt decisions; develop and maintain contact with a network of informants.

Other Requirements

Citizenship: Must be a U.S. citizen.
Residency: Must have had primary U.S. residency for at least three of the last five years.
Age Restriction: Candidates must be referred for selection before reaching their 40th birthday (with exemptions for certain veteran and federal civilian positions).
Veterans’ Preference: Eligible for an excepted service Veterans’ Recruitment Appointment; the age restriction does not apply if veterans' preference is eligible.
Formal Training: After hire, required to attend U.S. Border Patrol Academy in Artesia, NM, for approximately six months.
Language: Ability to speak and read Spanish, as well as English.
